Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Most people make the assumption that dental insurance is very similar to medical insurance. While there are some shared elements, dental insurance and medical insurance tend to focus on very different things. Medical insurance is mostly built around coverage for true emergency situations. Dental insurance, in contrast, focuses more on prevention. Your plan will be built in a way that encourages biannual checkups and cleanings so that you can avoid bigger dental problems and avoid the expenses that would come with having them treated.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Your insurance company can give you a more detailed outline of what your specific plan covers. If it follows a 100-80-50 structure, chances are your coverage will look like this:

  • 100% coverage for preventive services, including checkups and cleanings
  • 80% coverage for fillings and other “basic” kinds of restorative care
  • 50% for dentures, crowns, bridges, and other “major” procedures

The amount of coverage available and what counts as “basic” or “major” treatments may vary from plan to plan.

Our In-Network PPO Dental Insurance Providers

What does it mean if a dental office is in-network with your insurance? Simply put, it means that the dentist has contractually agreed to accept a pre-negotiated rate for various services. This can potentially save patients money, although it should be noted that out-of-network patients can still enjoy significant discounts. Below is a list of our in-network insurance providers; you can also call us if you’d like to learn more about what coverage is available under your plan.
